RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:
A DECEPTIVE 9-0 UEFA CUP VICTORY
2nd August 2009
The 9-0 win we scored
this evening is deceptive. The Croatian team was actually better than the Estonian team we played two days ago
whom we defeated 5 - 0.

Against Levadia, we missed a ton of chances, but last night against Osijec, the local team, Team Strommen scored every single time
we had the ball. You could tell that the Croatian women were not used to being beaten this badly, and by the end of the game., the
opposition's goalie was kicking her goal posts in frustration.

The first 5 to 10 minutes were even, but then the floodgates
opened. The score was 4-0 by half time, including a nice goal by D when she
caught the goalie cheating and coming off her line. We had watched Everton
defeat Levadia 7 - 0 in the game before ours, so we knew we needed at least
another second half goal to take the advantage.

Everyone, except me, was in good spirits this morning at breakfast.
9-0 wins tend to do that to a team. I was not on my best form because just 10 minutes previously, I thought my life had come to an end. While in the bathroom dealing
with yesterday's water retention, there was a loud explosion and a huge flash in the ceiling above me.

I escaped the bathroom with pulse racing, sweat beading on my
forehead and all this tooki place in complete darkness. It didn't take long to figure out that a Croatian fuse had blown, probably because I
had simultaneously turned on the bathroom
fan and a light. However, I swear that I also saw flames, and this was of some concern
to me.

Several maintenance men arrived eventually, and confirmed that yes the fuse was blown, but that I, and I am not sure how I get the blame for this, had
somehow blown up the
bathroom fan and light. This is not the best way to start one's day.

After breakfast, the whole squad headed out to practice. Everyone was
a little heavy legged, but we have been given tomorrow off and so it was important to get in a good training session in before the big game against Everton on Wednesday. I
managed to take part in most of the session, which was fun. I really am a healing machine!!!

Not much else really happened during the day. We ate, we drank and
we had meetings. I did manage to squeeze in time to pop down the road for a coffee at one point. There
is an American style cafe there. I hate being a typical north American
tourist who heads straight to the American style stores and restaurants, but when it comes to coffee, I just have to seek out the real thing. The coffee made here is
probably better and cheaper, but the coffee from home is so much sweeter, easier to drink and so much less like.... well espresso coffee. I like the affects of java, not just
the taste, and this place was exactly what I was looking for. I must be addicted.
Tonight the team is going to get competitive. We are
having a quiz. We have had a few of these team quiz events throughout the season, and they never cease to get everyone
thoroughly riled up. Of course,
there are cheaters in every country and they can quickly get the rest upset. D and I have a bit of a struggle in these events, seeing as the whole thing takes place in Norwegian, but I think we do pretty well considering.
Much of our success depends on questions about animals. I know the words for many Norwegian animals
