RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

TEAM STROMMEN WINS FIRST MATCH IN UEFA CUP 31st July 2009

Team Strommen won their first UEFA Pool match tonight by 5-0. They were awesome and dominated the game. It was hard for me to sit there and watch with my injured back, while D is still recovering from jet lag and didn't start the match.

Right from the kick off we pressured Levandia, which is a championship team from Estonia.  Cathrine Dekkerhus scored the first goal at 5 minutes, and I knew Team Strommen was going to have a good game when every fancy flick and every attempted pass worked exactly as intended. This rarely happens. And, even though Team Strommen was firing on all cylinders in the game, we still missed a ton of good chances. The score might easily have been in the double digits.

Nasra Abdullah scored the second goal at 25 minutes, but we set up many chances that were missed before this. Team Strommen kept this 2-0 lead into the break and, as importantly, kept Levandia  from managing a single shot on goal.

In the second half, Una Nwajei scored a hat trick, the first at 77 minutes, the next at 90 minutes, and the last 3 minutes into over time. These goals took the team to the final score of 5 - 0. The team was delighted with the win and the confidence it has given them. The next games will be much tougher affairs, but what counts for the moment is the fact we are at the top of our group and the fact that we created all these goal-scoring chances.

It's exciting. Next up we have to play the host team Osijec, who lost to Everton 3-1 last night. Our final match is against Everton in an afternoon game, and only the top finisher in the pool advances to the next round: A knockout competition of 32 teams.

Because our game on Thursday was a late one, we ate at 11:00 pm and we are now all sitting around the lobby with our computers trying to digest the food as we e-mail home. We are off to a good start.

Team Strømmen: Ingrid Bruserud – Connie Johansson (Diana Matheson), Marita Skammelsrud Lund, Anne Stenstvedt, Marit Sandvei (Eli Gulbrandsen) – Nasra Abdullah, Mari Knudsen, Ingrid Moe Wold, Ingrid Wang Andersen (Lene Storløkken ) – Una Nwajei, Cathrine Dekkerhus.
