Ali Gerba was named professional soccer player of the year at the annual awards gala hosted by the Fédération de soccer du Québec, and he was one of a number of award winners on the night. Rhian Wilkinson (female) and Olivier Lacoste-Lebuis (male) were named senior players of excellence, while Francesco Augustin (male) and Geneviève Richard (female) were named youth players of excellence. Karl Ouimette (male) and Sophie Thérien (female) were the two junior elite players.

Rhian was honored for representing Canada at the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, Canada’s first-ever appearance. She played in 22 of Canada’s 24 international matches in 2008, and she was the only quebecoise to have played in all the Canadian Olympic matches in China. Rhian was chosen ahead of Émilie Mercier et Cindy Walsh of the Comètes de Laval.

Lacoste-Lebuis, meanwhile, played professionally in France with Racing Club Strasbourg’s U-18 team. Other 2008 winners were Daniel Belleau (referee - excellence), Richard Gamache (referee - elite), Marco Masucci (coach - elite), Tahar Boudjelal (coach - regional), and Darron Aucoin (volunteer).

Corfinium St-Léonard (senior) was the men’s elite team of the year while Lakers du Lac St-louis (U-16 girls) was the women’s elite team of the year.

Soccer is well represented in the Gala Sports-Quebec which will be held on 17th December 2008 at the Sheraton Centre in Laval and covered by RDS live television.

Rhian is the nominee for Quebec athlete in a team sport, vying for the award with Samuel Giguère (football) and Matthew Langton (baseball).

Originaire du club Baie D’Urfé de la région du Lac St-Louis, elle n’avait que 20 ans lorsqu’elle a été appelée à jouer pour la première fois en équipe senior nationale en avril 2003.

Cinq ans plus tard, elle est une des deux seules Québécoises  membres de l’équipe nationale et la seule sur le « onze partant ».

Elle a disputé à ce jour soixante-sept (67) matchs internationaux, participé à deux (2) Coupes du monde (2003 et 2007), remporté l’argent aux Jeux Pan-Am (2003) et le bronze à ceux de 2007 et a fait partie de l’équipe qui s’est qualifiée pour une première fois aux Jeux olympiques de Bejing s’inclinant en prolongation en quart de finale face aux Américaines.

Au cours de la période d’éligibilité, soit du 1er septembre 2007 au 31 août 2008, Rhian a remporté le titre de « Joueuse senior excellence» lors du Gala de la Mi-Temps 2007 et en février 2008 elle a été sacrée « choix des fans 2007» par Soccer Canada.
