RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:
TEAM COMES TOGETHER AGAINST SINGAPORE 27th July 2008
I was pretty tired last night from the game against New Zealand in the Singapore heat, so I was pleased
when I woke up this morning less sore than expected. I forgot to mention
yesterday that we received support at the White Ferns' game from the Canadian
swimming team who came to watch. Thank you.

We had the same morning routine as yesterday, meaning that we started with a walk at 9:00am, followed
by breakfast. I have to tell you that sweating at 9:00am from just going for a walk is not much fun. Some of us
had to go change before heading to eat!
I should quickly mention that I have developed an eye infection and in the heat it is hard to treat. I have had it
for three days now, and it is quickly becoming a bit of a team joke: For example, “I stye with my little eye.....” from
Tancredi. Therefore, every morning this is the first thing I check on. I am mentioning this ailment now, as I saw a
teammate's picture of me today in which my wonky eye is seen in all its glory! I want everyone to know that my right
eye is not usually so red and angry looking. Nor is this a stye. It is just an infection, so BACK OFF!
Amy, D and I went to the local mall for part of the morning. We found a cache of peanut butter in one of the
stores - a big score. We were so thrilled about the find that we managed to walk away from the Starbucks we had just
bought coffees in without paying...oops! Being good Canadians though, we went back and made Amy pay the bill.
The afternoon was quiet, with only one team meeting. We are working on a team bonding exercise at the moment.
This consists of us all getting up in front of the group, staff as well as players, and talking for five minutes. Our fitness
guru, Andrew, went first, and then I followed his presentation. I enjoy that feeling of having had your turn and getting the
thing out of the way. So far, we have had two people present from a group of 32. This is going to be a long bonding process!
The rest of the afternoon was spent preparing for the game against Singapore by juggling in the hotel hallway. Our
cleaning lady here seems pretty intrigued by it all and pokes her head round the door of the room she is working in pretty
regularly. If she catches you looking, then she tries to look disapproving, but peripherally, I can see she is enjoying every
minute of the experience.
Well, we beat Singapore tonight 8-0, and I think the team played really well. After what was a rather disappointing result
yesterday, it was great to see the Canadian team playing so confidently. Admittedly, we were playing against a weak opponent in
Singapore, but we played better in the heat and humidity. Singapore is a tiny country so of course we should have won by such a
large score, but playing against weaker opposition does not always mean that you play well. Sometimes you just get an ugly
win as you drop your level of play to that of your opponents.
Jodi-Ann Robinson, Clare Rustad and Brittany Timko each scored two goals.
Randee Hermus and Kristina Kiss scored the other goals.
In the first half, we scored early and often as the team built up a 4-0 lead.
Randee was the first to score as she hit the goal in the fourth minute off a
Kiss corner. In the 12th minute, it was JAR scoring on a pass from Tancredi.
Just five minutes later, the duo combined for another goal.
In the 33rd minute, it was Britanny Timko's turn as she received the ball from
Amy Vermeulen and then put it in the back of the net.
In the second half, Canada made three substitutions, including Stephanie Labbé
making her first senior international appearance at 55 minutes after replacing
starter Karina LeBlanc.
As for goals in the second half, Clare Rustad made it 5-0 in the 57th minute
after capitalizing on a scramble. Sixteen minutes later in the 73rd minute, Kiss
scored on a scramble. In the 77th minute, Rustad scored her second of the game,
this time off a Kiss corner kick.
In the 84th minute, Timko rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the
game. Timko scored on a pass from Robinson.
Of note, Kristina Kiss played in her 75th career match with the Canadian
national team. Randee Hermus, meanwhile, scored her 12th career goal to move to
seventh on the all-time list.
I am tired. and off to bed. Tomorrow will be another busy day.
