RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

OLYMPIC SELECTION:  JOY AND REGRET 15th July 2008

The Olympic roster of 22 was announced today: 18 players make up the official team, with 4 athletes who are alternates, but who will be coming with us to Beijing.

It has obviously been a very exciting day for many of us, and the realization that we are about to become Olympians is just starting to sink in. However, the problem with all of us having lived together for two years here in Vancouver is that we have all become so close. Therefore, even though today has been an incredibly happy day for many of us, it has  been tempered with sadness and regret for our teammates and friends who have not been selected.

The truth is that all of us in camp have worked our butts off, day in and day out, for a very long time now, and to fall short right at the final hurdle, can be devastating. I did make the team, but I won't be able to forget my good friends who won't be coming with us.

Today we had the second of the four practices which have been scheduled in Vancouver before we depart for Singapore and an acclimatization camp. And, today's practice was one of the harder sessions we have had in quite a while. I hope that all the squad are saying this, and that it is not just me. The heat may have been a factor today in making the session so hard.

We now have two training sessions tomorrow on Wednesday, before a scrimmage in Surrey against a men's team on Thursday. Our departure is coming up fast. We will be getting a few days off before leaving on the 21st July, and this is primarily because we need time to pack up our apartments and move out. The residential camp is over.

Of course, as is our nature on the squad, most of the packing will not be done until the very last minute and the final day is going to be a gong show as everyone tries to get everything sorted. It is amazing how much you can collect after living somewhere for two years. I had no idea I had so much junk here with me. Moving is going to be a disaster, and I will have to store some of my belongings.

Well I am off to bed, as today's training has seriously exhausted me. But, it was a good reminder of reality. We have important matches coming up and we cannot afford to be too distracted by packing, moving out, press interviews and off field activities.
